Flying to Lord Howe Island is a unique and exciting experience. The runway is only 880m (2,900ft) long, bounded by a pristine lagoon at one end and a sandy beach at the other. Here’s a video of a Qantas Dash-8 200 landing and taking off:
A RAAF C-130J Hercules making low passes over the Lord Howe Island airstrip in March 2016. The island sees occasional visits from RAAF C-130 and C-17 aircraft, whose crews evidently find the short, tightly constrained airstrip useful for training purposes.
